the resurrection of polkadot beats has come.

I officially moved to LA about 3 months ago and have experienced many off the chain musical shows (man man, crystal antlers, learning music, etc). The most recent was David Byrne at the Greek theatre. Thanks to a very generous friend with a free ticket, I got to enjoy Mr. Byrne shake his hips like it was 1984. That and the hilarious interpretive dancers behind him.

Secondly, thanks to my musically savvy friends I’ve been recently listening to James Figurine “Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake” (After a failed attempt to get it on vinyl, I settled for the CD) & R Kelly’s “12th play 4th quarter” album. These two albums are pretty much amazing on totally different scales.

And my third thanks, goes to my 8 to 5 adult, salary paying, health benefits included, job which allowed me to purchase my set of technics 1200s plus a 3 channel numark sound mixer. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that December raise and Christmas bonus. Who ever came up with that superstition of keeping your fingers crossed for good luck…?

So LA isn’t so bad…granted there are major things that I hate about this town (e.g. traffic, traffic, bad LA drivers, smog, the Hollywood crowd, traffic, not being able to find parking anywhere, traffic) BUT like I said I really do LOVE living here.

mas to come.

SXSW 2008 choice # 26

I was blog hopping today and came across this video on the sweet fix. This band, Heartsrevolution, sounded familiar. Turns out they’ll be here in March. So I have numbered them #26 on my sxsw list.

They’re pretty much Crystal Castles non identical twin and apparently they’re on the same label, iheartcomix. Yeah, I know- I didn’t know they were a record label, I just thought they threw great parties. This C.Y.O.A (choose your own adventure) video I really dug.

SXSW 2008…let the count down begin (for the music portion anyway)

It’s not too early to start discussing sxsw 2008 (the music portion); the films are cool too, but let us talk music. It’s too obvious to discuss Dolly and R.E.M.; my top choices that I am oh so excited to see are (insert drum roll here please): Herman Dune, N.E.R.D., Cut Copy, MSTRKRFT, DJ Rekha, The Helio Sequence, and Handsome Furs.

I was first introduced to Herman Dune’s music two years ago in LA and instantly fell in love with them. I was constantly checking tour dates because I wanted nothing more in this world than to see them live. And now I have my chance.

DJ Rekha is my Indian nostalgia. With her Punjabi beats she brings me back to my favorite times in Northern India. I can’t wait to get on the dance floor for her spins.

N.E.R.D. one word- Pharrell.

I predict Cut Copy, MSTRKRFT, and the others will be a dashing good time as well. I plan on doing my hw and research on more bands that are scheduled to play to make sure I don’t miss a good show. I’ll keep you posted.

Persepolis was pretty neat.

I watched Persepolis this past Thursday evening. I was still too sick to go out-out and I had wanted to watch it for some time now. It had been released for a while now, but sadly, it takes Texas a month or two to get movies that were already released in other parts of the country.

It wasn’t necessarily a let down per se. I suppose my overly excited emotions and the hype I had built up from the trailer and reviews led me to believe it was going to be a 5 out of 5 stars movie. Don’t get me wrong, it was still very enjoyable and a cute version of the Iranian revolution. I give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I mean it wasn’t a “Step up 2 the Streets” or anything but I would still recommend for the public to see.

Marjane Satrapi shares her story of growing up in Tehran and moving around. While the first half of the movie is very entertaining and kept me wanting to know more about Marjane, the second half of the movie was much slower and her character arc seemed to drag. But alas, I still enjoyed it overall. Marjane said in an interview that this movie was to help people understand her people.
"’What we wanted to say is, if these people
[Iranians, Muslims] scare you, look closer: They
have parents, they have lovers, they have hope,
they have stories; The only real divide in this world
is between the idiots and non-idiots.’"

Apparently they’re making an English dubbed version with Sean Penn, Iggy Pop, and Gena Rowlands as voice overs.

I'm hot for the new hot chip album.

Well, yes, I know it’s not a very creative title and it’s probably been done before but this is the best I could come up with after being under the influence of Tylenol cold meds, Claritin, benadryl, two glasses of pinot noir and the latest episode of project runway. If you need confirmation, ask Jen and Kristen. And yes, ladies I did make it home safe and sound.

Now, to this post. Hot chip. Listen up you hipsters and in denial hipsters, it’s out. The new hotchip album is sensational to say the least. It ranges from your dancy electronic numbers to your R. Kelly R&B tributes (With a funny white boy take on it, it’s a tune called “wrestlers”), you’ll only get bored after repeating it five times.
My favs. include “ready for the floor”, “one pure thought,” and “made in the dark”. That about does it for my official second post. I’ll see you kids at booty bar this weekend on the dance floor.
